November 6,  2009

               LANSING - Attorney General Mike Cox today announced ten felony charges against Detroit resident Adam Korejsza, 45, accused of embezzling from the City of River Rouge nearly one million dollars in funds intended to pay for prescription drug coverage for city employees.

A joint Attorney General and Michigan State Police investigation of Korejsza, under contract to the City of River Rouge to manage their prescription drug plan, revealed that each month between January 2007 and September 2008 Korejsza made a payment to himself out of insurance premium dollars earmarked for the City's prescription drug coverage. These misappropriations exceeded $50,000.00 per month numerous times.

 "Stealing from the community in River Rouge, especially at a time when families are struggling with the worst economy in the country, is simply a heinous crime," Cox said.

Korejsza faces ten felony counts including:

·         One count of racketeering, a 20-year felony;

·         Three counts of embezzlement over $100,000.00, 20-year felonies;

·         Five counts of embezzlement over $50,000.00, 10-year felonies; and

·         Two counts of tax evasion, 5-year felonies.

The defendant was arrested today at his home in Detroit and arraigned before Judge Raymond Charron in District Court in the City of River Rouge.  He was assigned a million dollar bond and is next scheduled to appear for a preliminary examination on Friday, November 13.  If convicted as charged, Korejsza could serve 20 years in prison.

Korejsza has a prior felony record, pled guilty to embezzlement in 2006 and is currently on probation for that offense.  If convicted, he could face enhanced penalties as a habitual offender.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
