Overview header

• Overview of Michigan's Fish Hatchery System
The State of Michigan operates six hatcheries and five permanent salmonid egg take stations.

• Why We Have Hatcheries
Fish stocking is one of the principal tools used in fisheries management. Approximately 40% of all recreational fishing in Michigan depends on stocked fish, including 70% of the Great Lakes trout and salmon fishery. Developing and maintaining hatchery facilities that can readily produce the fish needed for fishery management is essential. The goal of Michigan's Fish Production program is to hatch, rear, and transport fish required for the management of both Great Lakes and inland fisheries.

• DNR Coolwater Production Strategy for 2008 PDF icon
In 2008, the DNR plans to produce approximately 2 million spring fingerling walleye (about 20% of the normal production) and up to 50,000 fall fingerling muskellunge. Northern pike will not be produced in 2008. Lake sturgeon will be produced in very limited numbers, up to 5,000 fall fingerlings.

• Michigan's Fish Production Program -- Summary for 2006-2007
The Department of Natural Resources, Fisheries Division reared a total of 12 different species of fish and 1 hybrid in Production Year 2003-2004.

• How do you determine which hatchery stocks which waters? PDF icon
Determining which hatchery will be stocking a body of water is a bit more complicated than one might expect. The way we allocate our stocking assignments may not always appear to be an efficient way to get fish to your waters, until you understand the complexity of successful stocking. It isn't as simple as raising all of the fish for an area in the nearest hatchery. For stocking to be successful, many factors must be taken into consideration.

• Harrietta State Fish Hatchery
Harrietta State Fish Hatchery is State of Michigan's oldest operating state hatchery and was first opened in 1901. It is a major rearing facility for rainbow (mostly for inland waters) and brown trout (both inland and Great Lakes waters).

• Marquette State Fish Hatchery
This facility also rears brown trout and splake (a brook trout lake trout hybrid) for both Great Lakes and inland waters. It is the primary broodstock and rearing facility for brook and lake trout that are used in both inland and Great Lakes waters.

• Oden State Fish Hatchery
The new Oden State Fish Hatchery complex was completed in 2002 and is one of the most advanced fish culture facilities of its kind. This facility is the brown and rainbow trout broodstock station and is a major rearing facility for those two species.

• Platte River State Fish Hatchery
This facility raises coho and chinook salmon and is the main egg take station for coho salmon in the Upper Great Lakes.

• Thompson State Fish Hatchery
This facility produces a wide range of fish species for both inland and Great Lakes waters because of its unique water supply.

• Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery
This facility produces a wide range of fish species for both inland and Great Lakes waters. Coldwater species produced for Great Lakes waters include steelhead trout and chinook salmon. Coolwater species produced at this facility include lake sturgeon (the only facility to rear this species), walleye, northern pike, channel catfish (obtained from other states) and northern muskellunge.
