Michigan's Fish Production Program -- Summary for 2008
The Department of Natural Resources, Fisheries Division reared a total of 12 different species of fish and 1 hybrid in Production Year 2007-2008. A total of 19 different strains (genetically unique types of a species) of these 13 species/types of fish were raised by our 6 hatcheries, 2 streamside rearing facilities, and 20 outlying rearing ponds (Table 1). The total number of fish stocked in 2007-2008 by MI DNR fish hatcheries was 10,408,369 fish (Table 2). The production year runs from October 1 to September 30 and follows our budgetary year. The stocking information presented is for the period from January 1 to December 31, 2008.
The number of fish stocked in Calendar Year 2008 is significantly reduced from previous years because Fisheries Division placed a moratorium on walleye, northern pike and muskellunge production because of Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia virus (VHSv) concerns. In Calendar Year 2008, muskellunge stocking was at nearly normal levels, walleye production was reduced by nearly 80% from normal levels, and no northern pike were stocked because of VHSv concerns.
Additionally, Fisheries Division obtained 27,905 yearling Skamania (summer-run) steelhead and 14,848 spring fingerling channel catfish from Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
There were three other sources of fish stocking in Michigan, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hatcheries, tribal hatcheries and private hatcheries. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service stocked 3,303,982 lake and brook trout during Calendar Year 2008, with lake trout being predominant (Table 3). Tribal fish hatcheries stocked 784,535 brook trout, lake trout and walleye during 2008, with walleye being predominant (Table 4). Private hatcheries contributed another 537,251 of 15 species to public waters under permit during the same calendar year, with fathead minnows predominant (Table 5). Bringing the total number of fish stocked into Michigan waters in 2008 to 15,034,137 of 21 species or hybrids.
