Investing
in Citizens will Grow Economy and Create Jobs In
my recent State of the State Address, I proposed an extension of
my "go anywhere, do anything" approach to bring new jobs
to Michigan. The bipartisan plan that we have set in motion is the
most comprehensive in the nation, and it's the right plan. That’s
why we will continue to focus on recruiting cutting-edge industries
and making investments in job training and education programs. But
the pace of change in this global economy is speeding up –
so we're going to have to put our plan into overdrive – not
hit the brakes like the Senate Republicans just did when they rejected
my 2008 budget proposal.

My plan cut
spending once again, despite making cuts every year since I became
governor, and it laid out a way to solve the crisis and still make
the key investments that will drive economic growth, create jobs,
and protect public education in the middle of the school year. Last
week, Senate Republicans turned down my budget cuts but have not
yet put their plan for Michigan on the table. How will they move
Michigan’s economy forward, and what’s their budget
for doing it? They owe it to the citizens of Michigan to tell us
what their plan is.
Together, my
proposals will end our financial crisis, and they will allow us
to grow our economy and create jobs. They will make Michigan a great
place to live, learn, and earn for all of us and for our children.
