Granholm Praises Successful Collaboration to Ensure Petoskey Breakwall Repairs this Year

Contact:  Heidi Watson 517-335-6397

August 25, 2006

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today praised swift collaboration between state and federal officials to secure $427,000 for immediate emergency repairs to the Petoskey breakwall, a federal navigational structure maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

“Working together in a bipartisan fashion, we were able to secure funds to make these critical repairs,” said Governor Granholm.  “This could not have happened without the leadership of Senator Carl Levin and Congressman Bart Stupak, as well as the critical support of Senator Debbie Stabenow, Congressman Peter Hoekstra, and Representative Gary McDowell.  Their hard work and willingness to help northern Michigan should not be forgotten.”

As the Petoskey breakwater is a federally-authorized navigational structure, the U.S. Army Corps has full responsibility for overseeing it.  It is for this reason that state funds could not be allocated for the repairs.  In signing her letter for the Department of Natural Resources budget last week, Governor Granholm directed the department to work with state and federal official to try and obtain funding as soon as possible.
