Governor Granholm Makes Appointments, Reappointments

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following appointments and reappointments to the Advisory Council for Asian and Pacific American Affairs, the Michigan Boxing Commission, the Board of Professional Engineers, the Michigan Bean Commission, and the Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee:

Advisory Council for Asian and Pacific American Affairs

Lawrence G. Almeda of Canton, intellectual property attorney for Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione.  Mr. Almeda is appointed for a term expiring April 30, 2007 and reappointed for a term commencing May 1, 2007 and expiring April 30, 2011.  He succeeds Natividad L. Jenks who is deceased.

Reginald A. Pacis of Ferndale, shareholder and attorney for Butzel Long.  Mr. Pacis is appointed for a term expiring April 30, 2009.  He succeeds Felix H. Chow who has resigned.

The Advisory Council for Asian and Pacific American Affairs is charged with serving in an advisory capacity to the governor and alerting her to pertinent issues within the Asian and Pacific American community.  The council also makes recommendations about programs and policies for the betterment of Asian and Pacific Islanders in Michigan and helps to promote public awareness of Asian and Pacific American culture and accomplishments.
 
These appointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.

Michigan Boxing Commission

Kevin D. Moore of Dearborn Heights, president of Truck Drivers Local Union No. 299.  Mr. Moore is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring February 19, 2011.
 
The Michigan Boxing Commission is charged with licensing and regulating professional and amateur boxing, sparring, and wrestling exhibitions in the state of Michigan.

Board of Professional Engineers

Mahmoud E. El-Gamal of West Bloomfield, geotechnical services department manager of Professional Service Industries, Inc.  Mr. El-Gamal is appointed to represent professional engineers for a term expiring March 31, 2009.  He succeeds Gregory C. Bovid whose term has expired.

George Y. Karmo of Farmington Hills, president of Tucker, Young, Jackson & Tull.  Mr. Karmo is appointed to represent professional engineers for a term expiring March 31, 2010.  He succeeds Stephen S. Miller whose term has expired.

John G. Kraus of Grand Rapids, president of Kraus & Kessenich.  Mr. Kraus is appointed to represent professional engineers for a term expiring March 31, 2009.  He succeeds David E. Mester whose term has expired.

Kevin F. Prihod of Detroit, executive director of the New Detroit Science Center.  Mr. Prihod is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring March 31, 2009.  He succeeds Ronald V. Quackenbush who has resigned.

The Board of Professional Engineers is responsible for establishing requirements for the registration of persons practicing engineering, as well as orders, rules, and regulations that specify standards of professional conduct.  The board also provides for penalties when standards of conduct are not met.

Michigan Bean Commission

Clinton A. Stoutenburg of Sandusky, owner of Stoutenburg Farms.  Mr. Stoutenburg is appointed to represent district 4 growers for a term expiring December 31, 2009.  He succeeds Thomas J. Wadsworth whose term has expired.

Dennis Engelhard of Tuscola County, farmer for the Fertile Valley Seed Farm.  Mr. Engelhard is reappointed to represent district 3 growers for a term expiring December 31, 2009.

Clifford Roggenbuck of Port Hope, owner of Roggenbuck Farm in Port Hope.  Mr. Roggenbuck is reappointed to represent district 5 growers for a term expiring December 31, 2009.

Lawrence H. Sprague II of Durand, branch manager for Kelley Bean Company.  Mr. Sprague is reappointed to represent processors, shippers, and handlers for a term expiring December 31, 2009.

The Michigan Bean Commission focuses on the research and promotion of the dry edible bean market within the state.

Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee

Mark L. Bierlein of Reese, self-employed farmer and manager of Bierlein Seed, Inc.  Mr. Bierlein is reappointed to represent district 5 growers for a term expiring September 23, 2009.

James B. Domagalski of Columbus, owner and operator of a crop farming operation.  Mr. Domagalski is reappointed to represent district 4 growers for a term expiring September 23, 2009.

Richard A. Welden of Jonesville, owner and operator of Welden Farm.  Mr. Welden is reappointed to represent district 2 growers for a term expiring September 23, 2009.

The Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee works to improve the economic position of Michigan soybean growers by aiding the industry through research and development, consumer education, and promotion and advertising programs.
 
These appointments and reappointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
