Crystal blue waters, sunny skies, blossoms in full bloom and orange barrels galore…
finally, the summer season is upon us! I was back at it again in Lansing this
week creating more jobs for our Michigan citizens. I was pleased to sign legislation
Monday morning that will create up to 7,100 jobs in Michigan by speeding up local
transportation projects across the state. Thousands of new jobs created before
lunchtime—forget coffee, that’s how I like to start my day!
Although that means traveling our roads may be a little slower going this summer,
just remember that every orange barrel you see represents another job for a
Michigan worker. And there will be a lot of them, as we will be putting shovels
in the ground on these projects before summer’s end. The Local Jobs Today
program will offer a combination of short-term and long-term grants to local
agencies throughout Michigan. The grants provided by the Local Jobs Today program
will kick-start local transportation projects across the state and help cities,
counties, and local transit agencies put federal transportation dollars to work
in their communities.
I am excited about the upcoming road projects; we have already accelerated
more than $3 billion in needed road improvements and pollution clean-up projects
across the state as part of my Jobs Today Initiative. The more work that needs
to be done on roads and buildings brings more good-paying jobs for the people
of Michigan. So, let orange barrel season begin…
