Demographic, Social, Economic, and Housing Data from the Census Bureau

The following types of data are available from the ACS data page of American Factfinder:

Data Profiles: Summary data on each geographic area with 65,000 or more persons

Ranking Tables: Over 45 sets of of tables comparing all states, counties, and places with 65,000 or more persons.

Detailed Tables: Over 150 tables for each geographic area with 65,000 or more persons.

Subject Tables: Tables that combine information on a particular topic from several of the "detailed" tables.

Public Use Microdata Samples

Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) files contain detailed individual responses to the ACS and other surveys.  PUMS files do not include names or other information that could be used to identify individuals, and they contain limited geographic information.  They are useful for preparing detailed cross-tabulations that are not available through published tables and data files.

PUMS files for 2005 and prior yearsare available from the Census Bureau.

Enhanced PUMS filesfor the decennial census, the ACS, and other demographic surveys are available through the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS), which is maintained by the Minnesota Population Center.
