Emily began working with women’s issues at age 14, when she was a teen correspondent for blue jean magazine, a publication providing smarter media for and by girls. She went on to be a monthly columnist for blue jean, with the column also being published in various newspapers around the country through Knight-Ridder Tribune Newswire.
Emily’s passion for women’s issues grew when she worked with the Michigan Women’s Foundation as a member of its Young Women for Change program. Emily was one of 20 members who helped distribute grant money to organizations in Kent County. As secretary of Young Women for Change, she spoke to various groups about the importance of philanthropy among young women.
During the summer of 2004, Emily worked with the Michigan Women’s Commission as a student assistant, an experience which will certainly be useful in her new role as a commissioner.
Emily will graduate from Michigan State University in May 2005 with a degree in English. As a lifelong Spartan, she is proud to be the editor-in-chief of the Red Cedar Log, the undergraduate student yearbook and the largest yearbook in the country.
Emily is married to Mike Malloy. They are both from Grand Rapids and plan to return to West Michigan following their time at MSU.
