Sen. Schwarz sponsored law fining producers of illegal drug
Today the Michigan Women's Commission applauded Governor John Engler and state Sen. John Schwarz, M.D., RBattle Creek for signing into law legislation, sponsored by Sen. Schwarz, that penalizes people who manufacture and possess methamphetamine, a dangerous, illegal drug.
Methamphetamine, or meth, is a volatile stimulant that comes in a powder, chunk or clear form. When snorted or smoked, meth produces a dramatically increased energy level and the ability to go without food or sleep for extended periods of time. The drug is highly addictive and can cause paranoia, hallucinations, violent behavior, nerve damage, depression and death.
Public Act 314 of 2000 increases penalties for the manufacture, possession and use of methamphetamine. In addition, the law makes it illegal to operate a clandestine laboratory to manufacture drugs.
"This measure gives law enforcement the tools needed to crack down on criminals who insist on making illegal drugs," said Chairwoman Anne Norlander of the Michigan Women's Commission. "Not only will this new law apply to methamphetamine production, but any drug that is made in an underground laboratory, like the rape drugs GHB or GBL. This legislation takes the prosecution of criminals one step further."
The mission of the Michigan Women's Commission is to improve the quality of life for Michigan women. In keeping with its mission, one of the commission's objectives for 2000 includes raising awareness to the dangers of rape and club drugs.
