Michigan Reads!

Michigan Reads logo

The Library of Michigan would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2011 Michigan Reads! One State, One Children's Book program. This was the most successful year yet, reaching more children in more libraries and classrooms. The program focuses on the importance of reading and sharing books with children, especially toddlers through early elementary, and the vital role libraries play in providing access to the quality books, programs and services that lay the foundation for reading and school success.

The Library of Michigan is hard at work on the 2012 program and will make announcements on the 2012 book and program as soon as possible. You can continue to use Memoirs of a Goldfish materials and materials from previous years with your students and children. These can be found at the links below.

We're collecting stories about the experiences of Michigan kids, parents, librarians and teachers with Michigan Reads! 2011. Help us to understand how this program worked for you or how it could be improved for future years.

For the fifth year in a row, Target continued its generous sponsorship of "Michigan Reads!", helping librarians, early childhood educators, parents, and caregivers with materials and ideas to help children develop literacy skills through play-based activities. The program also had additional support from the Library of Michigan Foundation, Sleeping Bear Press and the Taubman Corporation.

Frequently Asked Questions about Michigan Reads!

September and October are the months we concentrate on the Michigan Reads! program. We send out Michigan Reads! kits to all public library outlets (main libraries and branches), Head Start Programs, Great Start Readiness Programs, and public schools serving Kindergarten through second grade. These kits will include a hardcover copy of the year's book, a programming and resource guide filled with ideas to use in conjunction with the book; a poster, bookmarks, and stickers to use with the kids.

The information and program ideas on this site have been developed by librarians from across Michigan to help further the goals of Michigan Reads!:
