• September 16, 1908—General Motors is chartered.
After making the Buick Motor Company America's top-selling car company, Flint millionaire William C. Durant filed articles of incorporation in New Jersey creating the General Motors Company. The event went unnoticed by the media, but in the next sixteen months, Durant acquired an assortment of different companies. Eventually, he succeeded in making General Motors the nation's leading automobile producer.

Are you between the ages of 9 and 19? Here's a chance to celebrate Michigan Week by taking a photo of your favorite Michigan historic site! The contest is coordinated by Michigan State University Extension's 4-H Youth Development, the Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries and Michigan History for Kids magazine, with additional financial support from the Michigan Barn Preservation Network. The deadline for photo submission is Feb. 15, 2009.
